The Most Inbred Royal Ever

Charles II of Spain held the tragic record as the most inbred monarch in European history. For nearly 200 years, the Spanish Habsburg dynasty practiced systematic intermarriage between close relatives—uncles married nieces, cousins married cousins—in an attempt to preserve their "pure" royal bloodline.

The result? Charles II was born with a genetic profile more similar to a child of siblings than of typical parents. Scientists calculated his inbreeding coefficient at 0.254, meaning over 25% of his DNA was identical. He couldn't walk until age 8, couldn't speak clearly until age 4, and despite two marriages, remained infertile. When he died in 1700 at just 38 years old, the entire Spanish Habsburg dynasty died with him.

This is the dark side of royal "purity."
