Something Survived the Flames in 1822 #painting #history #romanticism

In 1822, Percy Bysshe Shelley drowned in the Gulf of Spezia. Ten days later, his decomposed body washed ashore. What happened next on that Italian beach would become one of history's most haunting moments.

His friends—Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt, and Edward Trelawny—gathered to cremate him in a pagan ceremony. They poured wine and frankincense into the flames. The fire burned for six hours.

But something refused to burn.

His heart survived the flames.

Trelawny reached into the fire and pulled it out. It was given to Shelley's widow, Mary Shelley—the woman who wrote Frankenstein about bringing the dead back to life.

She kept it for thirty years until she died.

Percy Shelley was only 29 when he drowned. He never learned to swim. His wife wasn't there to see him burn.

Painting: "The Funeral of Shelley" by Louis Édouard Fournier (1889)
Location: Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool
