The Execution of Lady Jane Grey

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey
She was Queen of England for exactly 9 days. Then they blindfolded her and led her to the execution block. She was only 16 years old.

Lady Jane Grey never wanted the crown. She was forced into becoming queen during the turbulent Tudor dynasty power struggles. When Mary I took the throne, Jane was declared a traitor and sentenced to death.

On February 12, 1554, in a private execution at the Tower of London, the teenage queen was blindfolded and struggled to find the wooden block where she would place her head. Witnesses described how she reached out with trembling hands, searching desperately. Someone had to guide her hands to the right place.

This haunting painting by Paul Delaroche, completed in 1833, captures her final moments with devastating accuracy. Delaroche was so committed to authenticity that he tracked down and rented the actual room at the Tower of London where Jane was executed—painting this masterpiece in the same space where she died, 280 years later.
