021423 SPLENDORA POLICE UPDATE ROAD CLOSURE ON TRAIN CRASH INCIDENT

Splendora Police met with Union Pacific officials Tuesday morning for an update on the train derailment cleanup. Officials say Midline Road will be open before noon for residents and customers of Texas Repos. Residents and customers are to go under the Fostoria overpass and check with the traffic control officer there before proceeding. School buses will also be able to get in. As far as the freeway feeder is concerned, it remains closed.  Any traffic northbound on the feeder past East River Road must get on the freeway and go to Cleveland to turn around. This roadway was hoped to be open today but with the rain, progress has slowed. Crews are still removing containers and rail cars. The railcars are being loaded onto 18-wheelers to be hauled off but before moving workers are having to manually shovel the pud out from the cars. Crews have laid new track and rock and are currently aligning the tracks. They expect the first train to pass through before noon. For the next several days the trains will be traveling at a very low speed and the track alignment checked after each pass. This could mean some longer waits at crossings. The feeder could be possibly open on Wednesday morning. After the cars are moved the road needs to be cleaned and any repairs made. In addition, as the ditch dries some crews will be reworking the ditches which should also help with the drainage issues that have plagued the area for some time now.
