La famosa laguna di Balos
si trova a circa 56 km a nord-ovest di Chania e 17 km a nord-ovest di Kissamos, formata tra il Capo Gramvousa e il piccolo Capo Tigani e sotto la catena di Platiskinos. Balos è sicuramente la spiaggia più fotografata di Creta, è famosa per le sue acque turchesi, la bellezza naturale selvaggia e lo splendido scenario esotico. Durante l'estate, è visitata da migliaia di persone, che arrivano principalmente con i traghetti che partono dal porto di Kissamos.
Arrivare a Balos in macchina è piuttosto avventuroso; gli ultimi 8 km della penisola sono una strada sterrata con molte rocce. Ci vogliono almeno 30 minuti per guidare lungo questo tratto ed è previsto un pedaggio di 1 € a persona riscosso all'inizio del percorso.
C'è un parcheggio gratuito disponibile alla fine della strada, se è pieno, è possibile parcheggiare l'auto lungo la strada. Da qui sono ancora circa 1,5 km a piedi. Il sentiero è sassoso e si impiegano circa 20-30 minuti per arrivare alla spiaggia; è consigliato perché la vista della laguna dal promontorio è spettacolare.

The famous lagoon of Balos is located approximately 56km northwest of Chania and 17km northwest of Kissamos, formed between the Cape Gramvousa and the small Cape Tigani and below the range of Platiskinos. Balos is surely the mostly photographed beach in Crete, it's famous for its turquoise waters, the wild natural beauty and the beautiful exotic scenery. During the summer, it is visited by thousands of people, who arrive mostly by the ferries running from Kissamos port.
Getting to Balos by car is quite adventurous; the last 8 km on the peninsula is a dirt road with lots of rocks. It takes at least 30 minutes for driving this stretch and there is a toll of €1 per person collected at the beginning of the road .
There is a free parking lot available at the end of the road, If it is full, park your car along the road. From here it is still about 1.5 km by walk. The path is stony and it will take you about 20-30 minutes to get to the beach ; it's recommended because the view of the lagoon from the promontory is spectacular.
