First Solo Overnight Hike :: Facing Anxiety Alone at Blyth Hut on the Round the Mountain Trail

With a spring in my step and a sense of positivity that comes with the New Year, I packed up my backpack and drove two hours to the Ohakune Mountain Road trailhead for the Mt Ruapehu Round the Mountain Trail. The goal of this trip was to face my fear and re-attempt an overnight trip to Blyth Hut, which I'd miserably failed at before I began my Te Araroa adventures.

Despite all my experience to date, i've never done any solo overnight hiking before and it wasn't until I reached the hut that I realised there was a good chance I'd be the only person there. As darkness fell my anxiety started to get the better of me and I had a full-blown anxiety attack alone in the wilderness on the side of Mt Ruapehu, with no choice but to face my fear alone.
