Pros and Cons of Living in Spokane, Washington | Affordability, Crime, Jobs, Weather, Taxes, + More
In this video, I list the pros and cons of living in Spokane, Washington. I'll cover affordability, crime, weather, employment, taxes, things to do, traffic, politics, and more.
I've spent 20 years of my life living in Spokane. I grew up here. While I was growing up, I didn't like it. I wanted to live in a big city. I left for about 11 years. Now, I've grown to appreciate it more.
Overall, Spokane is a pretty decent city to live in. There is lots to like. It's relatively affordable. Particularly compared to Western Washington. It's naturally beautiful. There are also quite a few things to do. The city also has a pretty diverse economy. It's growing. In addition, it's not a crowded city. Traffic isn't bad.
There are some drawbacks to consider. Spokane has a pretty high crime rate for a city of its size. The weather also gets extreme. It reaches over 100 degrees in the summer and drops below 0 in the winter. Public transport is also pretty poor. There may be some amenities you miss if you're moving from a big city. Salaries can also be pretty low here. The city can also be a bit depressing. There is a problem with homelessness here.

A few pros and cons I forgot to mention in the video:
One major pro is that Spokane has great water. There is a natural aquifer under the city with lots of clean fresh water. I often drink tap water here. It tastes great.
The air quality is usually good as well. There isn't much pollution. There may be a month or so during fire season when the air quality is poor. Fire season is in the late summer or early fall.
Property tax also isn't too bad here. I think it's around 0.95%, which is below the national average.
