Heavy Duty Machining Large Hydraulic Cylinder Rod for Hitachi Mining Excavator | Part 1

This video is Part 1 of heavy duty machining a new large hydraulic cylinder rod for a Hitachi EX1200 mining excavator bucket cylinder. This shows all the heavy duty machining to turn a large 2.5 metre (8 foot) length of 170mm diameter 4140 induction hardened chrome steel into the new cylinder rod. We are using our TM-26120G centre lathe for machining and thread cutting the hydraulic cylinder shaft. Our material supplier here in Australia had the steel rod custom chrome induction hardened as there was no 4140 in 170mm diameter available. We found the chrome layer to be extra tough, destroying a few ceramic inserts trying to get through it!
