Silica Rapids (music only) [NZ] | Hiking with kids

We walked to the Silica Rapids in Tongariro National Park in early Fall, starting near the Whakapapa Visitor Center. This is a popular short walk in Whakapapa and includes incredible views of the mountains and colorful rapids. We decided to hike out to the Silica Rapids and back the same way to reduce our total time (and to get back for lunch at the Chateau Tongariro!), which made our journey about 6km total. The track can be done as a 7km loop, but would then include a 2km walk down the road back to the starting point.

The 6 kilometer out-and-back walk took us about 2 hours (with a 5 year old), including an extended break at the rapids for snacks, and was very easy. There were a few tree branches and stairs to navigate, but, for the most part, the trail was flat and well maintained.
