Coming up an interview with 38 Special singer Don Barnes who’s band started out as with a southern rock sound but by the early 80s they were a straight ahead arena rock band with several huge songs including today’s 1982 #1 rock hit: Caught up in You... It was a co write between Don Barnes, Guitarist Jeff Carlisi and a rival band’s main songwriter. Jim Peterik of Survivor. In fact when Survivor’s guitar player heard Jim was writing for another band he was livid. It’s time for another edition of our series revelations where artists and bands do a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums and relay fascinating insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we get the story behind one of catchiest rock hits of 1982 It’s 38 special with their #1 rock smash Caught Up in You. . A quick crash course on the band… The classic lineup included Don Barnes on lead vocals and guitar, Donnie Van Zant on vocals and guitar and the younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zant, Stever Brookins and Jack Grondin on drums and percussion, Jeff Carlisi on guitar and Larry Junstorm on bass. They were all working day jobs and were in and out of other bands before they hit it big but when they started composing their own original songs they got serious especially Donnie Van Zant when his famous older brother told him to stick with music when he was about to quit.

He advised him to go after it with everything he had since music was in his blood. Don Barnes even walked away from a high paying job at a railroad to go after it. after that the band spent most of 1975 and 1976 on the road paying their dues… after a few years Ronnie Van Zant gave his brothers band their big break by introducing them to Skynyrds own manager Peter Rudge who also managed the who as well as being the tour manager for the rolling stones… 38 special got to open up tours for the likes of Kiss, Foghat and Peter Frampton to name a few. This led to them getting signed by A&M records. Singer songwriter Dan Hartman who had cut his teeth with the Edgar Winter group, writing the hit FreeRide and would later have a solo hit with I can Dream about you, was chosen to produce 38 Special’s first album.

Their first couple albums floundered as they tried to find their sound but it was their 3rd record that put ‘em on the map with the title track Rockin into the night becoming their first big hit. It also started a writing relationship with Survivor band member Jim Peterik…
