Coming up, today’s band Foreigner took a frigid walk through New York City in minus 20-degree weather to nail down their classic 70s song Cold as Ice… a top 10 single about a gold-digging ice queen. A lot of people have wondered through the years if it was based on a real girl, and we’ll get to the bottom of that. Apparently, after finishing Cold as Ice, one of the song’s co-writers Mick Jones thought it was just a little too pop and wasn’t sure if it belonged on the album. But when his bandmates said they loved it, he came around. It was a good choice because Cold as Ice is an undeniable classic rock standard… Tag-teaming with me for today’s tale, we’ve got not one, but two founding musicians from this legendary band Lou Gramm and Mick Jones. For today’s episode, we’re putting the spotlight on Foreigner, a band that since its inception has established itself as one of the top rock outfits of its time. In the US alone, Foreigner has sold in excess of 80 million albums and singles. Their first five albums all went Top 5 in America, including the #1 “4” in 1981. Their hit catalog includes iconic tracks such as Feels Like the First Time, Hot Blooded, Waiting For a Girl Like You, Juke Box Hero, I Want to Know What Love Is, and on and on.

But today we’re telling the story of their 1977 stone-cold classic ‘Cold as Ice.’ And giving us the inside scoop is not one, but two principle members of Foreigner, two greats, no question… Lou Gramm and Mick Jones. Foreigner got its start in early 1976 when guitarist and singer Mick Jones met multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald at a recording session for Ian Lloyd. Months later, Jones and McDonald formed the band when they connected with four then-unknowns… including Lou Gramm, the lead vocalist of the band Black Sheep. The other three members in that original lineup were bassist Ed Gagliardi, keyboardist Al Greenwood, and drummer Dennis Elliott.

The band derived its name from the fact that these original members were drawn from both sides of the Atlantic. Jones, McDonald, and Elliot all hailed from England, while Gramm, Gagliardi, and Greenwood all were US citizens. The six-piece set to work writing and...
