2-Deoxy-D-Glucose/Anti-COVID drug/Anti-Cancer drug/PET scan imaging

2-deoxyglucose/2-deoxy-d-glucose/2-DG is used as a anti-cancer drug, its potential cytotoxic effect is used as anticancer drug is tried, it is also been approved by DCGI as anti-covid drug. DRDO in collaboration with Dr Reddy's lab developed 2-deoxyglucose as anti-covid drug. 2-DG is a synthetic glucose analog in which the 2-hydroxyl group is replaced by hydrogen. 2-deoxyglucose inhibits glycolysis due to formation and intracellular accumulation of 2-deoxy-d-glucose-6-phosphate (2-DG6P), inhibiting the function of hexokinase and glucose-6-phosphate isomerase. 2-deoxyglucose inhibit glycolysis and ATP synthesis, disrupt N-glycosylation of proteins, decrease energy metabolism and interfere with cellular thiol metabolism, generating oxidative stress, 2-DG appears to be an efficient cytotoxic agent. Importantly, all of these effects are mostly observed in cancer cells, without significant effect on the viability of normal cell. The Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a lab of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), developed the anti-COVID-19 therapeutic application of the drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose. The institute worked in collaboration with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL), Hyderabad.
