The Packaging:
Sturdy cardboard box can be broken down, recycled, or reused to hold the markers. I prefer this type of packaging over masses of plastic.

The Markers:
Each pen really does include three very different colors
I do wish the colors were arranged light to dark, regardless of the actual color inside, would be easier for quick grabbing and quick use
Color caps and color collar, the 'triad' name is at the end of each cap, with the individual colors screened on the body itself
Would be nice if Spectrum Noir used the same color number system they use with their alcohol markers, this would invite more mixed media work as color matching would be easier. This is common with other art supply brands like Prismacolor and Faber-Castell

Literature includes some basic promo about why these markers are good and on the back, a little bit of info about color theory and mixing. Would have preferred more in-depth info about the make of these markers (including maybe a diagram of how the marker is et up) and whether or not the nibs are replaceable and the inks refillable.

These boxes are REALLY hard to open
Same type of brush as the Triblend markers- that's fine
Don't seem to be refillable, replacement nibs don't seem to be available, which is a disappointment

Maybe a little TOO easy to uncap?

Out of 3 sets, 9 markers, you get 27 very different colors, which is a pretty decent color gamut with not too big a footprint. These could really bring something interesting to the world of watercolor markers.

Mass tone swatches:
Blended out with water swatches
Color loses saturation and intensity really quickly when blended out directly on the paper
Swatching these really does remind you that in each 3 pack, you're really getting 9 total colors
If you apply marker directly to wet paper, it does have a tendency to tear up the paper, so indirect application for most layers is probably advisable (using a palette)

These aren't nearly as challenging to uncap as the Spectrum Noir Triblends- maybe Spectrum Noir heard my complaints (I doubt it, but hey)

Tan is not a tan, it's a really dark brown.

Normally I would not really want to use a waterbrush for this, as I find it dilutes too quickly, and I have difficulty controlling waterflow with it.

Already starting to see some color chromatography, but I'm going to allow these to dry out, and then come back.

After drying:
Masstone swatches did reactivate
Blended out swatches did not

Color mixing swatches
On the Paper
Marker straight to the paper, on top of already wet marker tears up the paper quickly, so you want to maybe save that type of technique for the end of your illustration

Colors do blend easily and well- not just colors within the same marker, but colors from different markers. Tip-to-tip blending is easy, and also lends pretty results.

Color mixing on my Teflon desk coating results fairly clean, nice mixes, but a bit more pastel than their straight from the marker counterparts. Far less likely to tear up your paper, and you can build up some nice tones this way.

Optical mixing:
Dark over light- doesn't seem to pick up much of the first color, can do a clean optical mix
Light over dark- some blending and streaking, some color pickup and movement

The Verdict:
These seem like a LOT of fun, and a great way to play around with water-soluble water-based markers. You get a lot of color for your investment, and they don't take up as much space as say traditional watercolor markers, but maybe more space than traditional watercolors.

I am disappointed that replacement nibs and refills aren't available, and hope Spectrum Noir takes this into consideration.
