Pentel Color Shades Pack- Artist Reviews Pencils

Hey Artnerds! Today we're taking a look at a neat set from Pentel in one of my favorite colors- non photo blue! We're checking out all the goodies in the Pentel Color Shades Pack.

6 pieces- 1 mechanical pencil, 2 pens, a Clic Erase, and a Hi Polymer Eraser

Blister packed- cardboard and plastic.

Products:
Hi Polymer and Clic Erase:
Both have blue colored erasers- generally, the ClicErase and HiPolymer have softer white erasers. How will ths effect erasability? I'll have to conduct a side by side test.
Body on the blue ClicErase is clear- that's a neat touch (I love transparent materials)
The blue erasers seem more plasticy than the white vinyl
Wouldn't be able to buy a blue refill

Pens:

RSVP:
Was a standard workhorse for school when I was growing up. I remember it being an easy and faithful writer with few of the problems I saw in cheaper ballpoint pens. I felt super fancy writing my 5th grade essays with an RSVP.
Grip is rubberized but not particularly cushy.

EnerGel X
A gel pen
Japan and Pentel make decent gel pens, so although I'm not sure how this will differ from the RSVP, it will be interesting to compare the two. Very similar to the RSVP, slightly more stylish- both have rubberized grips, plastic clips, and are back advance.

Pentel Wow!
Triangular body
Stylish- flares out a bit at the back
Rubberized grip similar to the EnerGel and RSVP
Back Advance
Not going to be prone to rolling off the desk
They don't include any refills

Seems to be comparable so far to the Pilot Color Eno (or G2) or the Bic Velocity
Plastic body pencil, clear, clutch mechanism

Writing Test:

EnerGel X- A good writer, smooth, easy to write with, comfortable. Smears a little.
RSVP- Fairly typical for a ball point pen. Slightly waxy ink. Not as nice as the Energel. Smears a little.
Wow!- Fairly comfortable to hold for writing. I'm always a fan of Pentel's lead quality- no complaints here.
Erasing Test:
Surprisingly, no erasing problems! Let's see if any pop up during the DRAWING TEST!

Drawing Test:

Blue:
Triangular shape facilitates light sketching- broad area to rest my finger on and guide the sketch
Lead did break a few times from the pressure- maybe not enough give in the feed, but this is common with the two pencils most comparable to this one- the Pilot G2 and the Bic Velocity

Graphite:

Some hand fatigue, more from my drawing position than from the pencil itself. Pencil is lightweight and doesn't cause additional hand stress.
I do wish the Wow! had a more comfortable grip, and I'm still on the looking for a plastic-bodied Pentel with a comfort grip.
The Verdict:

Individual Products:
Energel X- This is indeed a smooth writing pen! The advance action has a satisfying click. Grip is more for grip than for comfort.

RSVP- Pentel definitely has better pen options available- the RSVP sorta feels like filler. Not much has changed with ths pen over the two decades since I've used it.

Clic Erase- It's a standard clic erase- but blue! I like Clic Erase erasers, and recommend them regularly.

Hi Polymer Eraser- Not quite as nice as their usual white vinyl High Polymer Eraser, and if you were buying the set on the novelty of a colored eraser- just skip it. I do recommend you check out regular Hi Polymer white vinyl erasers though!

Pentel WoW! In Pentel's usual lineup, it just doesn't really stand out. Pentel makes such a wide array of useful, affordable, and accessible mechanical pencils, the Wow kinda gets lost in the crowd. It's not bad, but it's not worth buying the set for. I haven't seen WoW for sale outside of this pack, but if you have, let me know where in the comments!

Apparently, Pentel makes an EnerGize mechanical pencil using the EnerGel body, so I'll keep an eye out for that!
The Package as a whole:
It's easy to overpay for this on Amazon- so don't be fooled. The Pink set is going for around $5- around that seems fair. If you've see this set for sale out in the wild, let me know!
