Communication
Communication is so important in construction, there's so many different people that are part of the team that it is tough to get on the same page. Make sure that you fully understand issues as a new entry or project engineer and ask questions to make sure that you fully understand the plan. Also with construction drawings that you provide to the field workers, be sure that they are clear and clean. Do not give the workers messy, marked up drawings that take time to decipher. The more thinking and analyzing the field needs to do, the less efficient they will be and thus the less money you can make for the company. And, always communicate verbally if possible, don't just email. Verbal communication helps build relationships well which are so important for the industry.

Transitions
Construction material transitions are one of the most difficult details to perfect and understand on the job. Transitions between materials and trades are so important to look through early and get them right. Examples include, flooring thickness transitions, waterproofing transitions, roofing transitions, any time you have multiple materials and multiple subtrades interfacing you can have installation and warranty issues. Its best to get all the subtrades together with the appropriate manufacturers and ask the questions to the designers as soon as possible.

Construction Tolerances
It is so important to consider construction tolerances when reviewing details for the project. Each scope of work has a specific tolerance along with it's install and you need to make sure your contract document details reflect this. It is your job as the contractor to notify designers if the details hold you to a higher standard than you can actually build. Set the expectation with the owner and design team early and give them alternatives and help them understand why these tolerances need to be considered and plan together to create details that are achievable and aesthetically acceptable.

Losing and Procurement of Materials
Materials tend to walk away on the project and you need to make sure everything is stored properly. There are a lot of different people and trades on the job and it just takes a couple people to ruin everything. Procurement of materials is so important and you need to make sure that you understand where all your materials are coming from and how long they will take. Your procurement log should be tied to the schedule and making sure waiting for materials is not holding up progress of the job.

Changes and Drawings
It seems that the trend in the industry is that construction projects will begin without a complete design and design documents and it becomes tough to execute the project. Construction changes will always happen, but the amount of changes can hopefully be limited up front. If the contractor is involved early on with design; they can influence design to help make it constructible. As an entry level engineer, the best thing you can do it understand how you can best help the ownership and design team execute at the highest level and do you best to be a team player.
