Food can be expensive in Hawaii, the average plate lunch will cost you about $10-$15. Groceries can tend to be a little more expensive since a lot of the food needs to be imported. If you have family in Hawaii it helps, they can help you take home leftovers to save. I'll typically spend $400-$500 per month on food.

Entertainment can be relatively cheap in Hawaii if you're doing the right things. Taking advantage of the nature around us, there are a lot of activities you can do for free in Hawaii that can cut costs down. However for me, golf is my entertainment, one of the more expensive hobbies, and I'll spend a little over $100 per month at the course.

Housing is so expensive in Hawaii and is the biggest issue when it comes to cost of living. If you are expecting to live in downtown Honolulu, you will be paying over $2,000 for a decent apartment, maybe even studio. If you live in and own a condominium you will also have to pay maintenance fees. When you add in electricity, cable, etc, if you're living in a good location you'll likely be paying around $2,200 at the end of the day every month to live in Hawaii in just housing costs.

Transportation in Hawaii was more of an issue prior to the pandemic as Hawaii had some of the worst traffic, just behind LA. However, due to the way the freeways and neighborhoods are zoned, it makes driving more desirable than public transportation. The cost of owning a vehicle is not only the cost of the car, but also insurance, safety checks, registration fees, etc. Gas in Hawaii is over $3 at the moment, and we have seen it go into the 4s over the past few years.

Then adding in subscriptions, misc fees, etc. I'll pay a little over $100 every month. Keep in mind if you have an Amazon Prime account in Hawaii it doesn't guarantee you 2 day shipping. It'll be free, but it'll just come when it does. So in all, it costs me a little over $3,000 to live one month in Hawaii, but keep in mind a portion of my mortgage goes to equity of the home, and also, I do live in a better area. There are ways to cut costs to live in Hawaii, you just have to be creative with it if you really want to live here. Hawaii is a beautiful place to be, and it almost justifies the price tag.
