What to see and do in Hallstatt, Austria.

Hallstatt is probably Austria's most photographed village. It is also one of the oldest with a history that goes back at least 7000 years. The combination of delightful houses built on the steep mountain slopes, the glass-like lake, white swans, and welcoming restaurants and cafes is hard to beat. No wonder they have built a replica in China.
Many visitors are day-trippers but the picture-perfect town and spectacular surrounding country deserve more of your time than that. Some days in summer, the crowds can be almost overwhelming but when all the buses depart it takes on a different, cozy complexion. Fortunately there are good accommodation choices.
Allow time to go up into the mountain to the Skywalk which is 350 metres directly above the town then visit the world's oldest salt mine on a guided tour.
Elsewhere in the area there is a gondola to take you to the 5Fingers viewing platform then you can trek, go paragliding or explore the giant ice cave. In winter there is skiing and snow boarding.
