Six Zones Surrounding your Vehicle - Aceable 360

There are a total of six zones surrounding your car. Managing all of these zones is key to defensive driving.

If you look straight ahead, you will see what I like to call “The Front”. To the left of that, I call “The Left Front”. To the right of the Front zone, called, you guessed it, “The Right Front”.

These zones are important because they are ahead of your vehicle, and a very large portion of driving is spent moving forward.

Now, behind your car there are three more zones. If you look in your rear-view mirror, you will see “The Rear” zone directly behind you. If you look to your left in your driver side mirror, you will see the zone which I will refer to as “The Left Rear”. You can also see this zone by quickly checking over your left shoulder. If you look to your right in the passenger side mirror, you will see “The Right Rear” zone. This zone can be viewed through your passenger side mirror, or by quickly glancing over your right shoulder.

The rear zones are important because other traffic can sneak up on you if you aren’t paying attention.

All six zones are constantly changing, so you’ll have to stay alert and vigilant about what is happening all around you while driving. Keep in mind that all of the other vehicles on the road are operated by humans like yourself, so be considerate to yourself and others by paying attention. It is up to you to manage your car and the space around your car.

While driving, keep checking your mirrors to always be aware of what is happening in all six zones. You want to always know what is going on around you at all times.
