How to Drive in a Traffic Circle - Aceable 360

Although you're well on your way to becoming a driving expert, there's still plenty for you to learn about roadways and intersections. For example, some of them do not follow the traditional ways we've discussed, and are considered to be NON-traditional.

A non-traditional intersection is the meeting of two different roadway users in an unusual place. One example is a "traffic circle", which can sometimes go by different names. For example: “roundabout” or “rotary” These round intersections are non-traditional intersections where traffic flows in a circular fashion around a center median. They are normally controlled by yield signs instead of stop signs or streetlights.

When you approach a traffic circle, drivers already in the circle always have the right of way.There can, however, be more than one car in the circle at a time, just stay alert and watch for your opportunity to enter. Keep in mind the circular flow will always be counter-clockwise, meaning you will enter the circle by turning right. You should also always yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk when entering or exiting the circle.

As you approach, slow down and watch for traffic inside the circle.

Yield to the circling traffic, and enter the circle when it is clear.

Maintain a safe speed while circling. Don’t forget to signal as you approach the exit and turn right out of the circle.

Some larger traffic circles have multiple lanes where the inside lanes are used for traversing the circle while the outside lanes are used for entering and exiting. What we've learned so far still applies, but no matter what situation you find yourself in while driving, you must always give your full attention.

Again, slow down as you approach and yield to the traffic inside. When it is clear, enter the circle.

While inside, use the inside lane to circle the median. Always use your turn signal and check your blind spot before switching lanes.

As we approach the street on which we’d like to exit, use your signal, check your blindspot, and switch lanes when it’s clear to prepare to exit the circle.

Yield to any pedestrians, and when it's clear, it is time for you to exit.
