Merging onto a Highway - Aceable 360
Ace teaches you techniques to safely merge onto a highway.
After you start driving, eventually you will have to merge onto a highway or interstate to get where you need to go. These high-speed roads are “controlled-access highways,” which means they are designed for fast moving vehicular traffic. Along these highways you will see “highway ramps” which allow drivers to enter or exit. This may seem overwhelming, but let's break it down so you can merge onto that highway with confidence.
You’ll see the signs are clearly posted to show you where the on-ramp starts. Activate your turn signal and get on that ramp towards the highway! While on the ramp, you want to glance towards the highway to check the traffic as you are entering. You can use your mirrors and quickly check over your shoulder to make sure there’s no one in your blind spot.
This merging area gives you space to gauge your speed and position in relation to the highway traffic. You’ll probably need to accelerate a bit to get up to highway speeds.
Keep an eye open for a gap in traffic you can enter. You need to find this space before the acceleration lane ends. Stay alert and watch how we safely merge into the lane. Maintain the flow of traffic and merge seamlessly. Finally, don’t forget to turn off your turn signal!
Follow these simple steps and you’ll be a merging pro in no time!
