100 Million Carbon Fiber YouTube Award For Pewdiepie - How it's made
Hi everyone! in this video I'll show you how I've made the custom 100 million subscribers youtube button for Pewdiepie. You'll also see the struggle, or rather adventure, I went through to make this one.
The Award is made out of 100% real carbon fiber and is not wrapped with a dbrand skin or carbon fiber wrap. Techniques used here are vacuumbagging with prepreg carbon fiber. Same techniques are used in F1 or any high end exotic cars like koenigsegg. I've used out of autoclave prepreg, they will mostly use expensive autoclaves with slightly better results.
As for the process in making a part like this:
I started with a 3D print that was finished using a 1K filler followed by a plastic primer then 2K clearcoat on top to seal everything. The first idea was to make a resin infusion mould out of the Easy Composites Tooling system. First gelcoat then coupling coat with fiberglass followed by fiberglass with tooling polyester resin. After applying the layer of gelcoat I've noticed some problems with the gelcoat reacting with the products on the pattern. I decided to start all over again, With the difference of having a step in between, being a silicone mould that needed to be made. The silicone mould is casted in a box on top of the newly finished button. After curing the silicone mould is removed and ready for casting with epoxy resin.
For the first casting I've used glasscast with a tint of red and neon red pigment to give it a nice vivid color. It's better to cast in multiple layers as it might cause a good amount of heat due to the exothermal reaction. Once cured the part is removed from the mould. Doing rivertables as well at the moment I had some leftovers to cast the new blue youtube button that will be used as the plug for the new mould to make the carbon fiber youtube button out of.
For the mould I've used a high temperature tooling system so it can withstand the higher temperatures needed for prepreg carbon fiber parts. Prepreg carbon fiber was laid into the mould and cured under vacuum in the oven. Once demoulded just some trimming was needed and some sanding. Clearcoat is added on top to give it a nice shine. The base of the award button is made from olive wood, with the text being a decal applied under the clearcoat.
For the play logo the same principle was used as for the first silicone mould. The button was made out of a left over of epoxy resin I had, trimmed to shape and sanded to high gloss before covering it with CS2 silicone. Once demoulded a variety of buttons can now be casted. For the final assembly it was just putting everything together and getting the final shots.
So I hoped you liked this video and hope to be able to send this one to pewdiepie personally.
