Coming up, a song that contains arguably the most iconic line in the history of the rock era… Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio A Nation Turns its Lonely Eyes to You… So poetic, so perfect. A tribute from the greatest: Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel… or Simon and Garfunkel from the Graduate film. Only problem is. This sports legend felt slighted by the lyrics. He was pissed! He totally misunderstood the context. Mrs. Robinson actually started out as Mrs Roosevelt… as a tribute to the first lady. it was going to be a lead song for The Graduate but then Paul Simon actually rejected the offer…would the movie execs be able to talk them into it? It was originally about Mickey Mantle but Simon had to change it because Mantle did’t have enough syllables to work for the song. Oh ya… Also When the song became famous the Yankee Clipper threatened to sue Simon and Garfunkel thinking they were making fun of him but years later Paul Simon was able to explain it to him… Worried that the soundtrack album would come out at the same time as the duo's next album it was a battle of marketing that would make them the first group since the Beatles to replace themselves at #1. So, it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads... songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. This one has hypnotized every generation since its release. It's a catchy, yet deceptively deep 1968 movie headliner. I’m talking about Mrs. Robinson, by Simon & Garfunkel.

Taking a step back to 1967, Simon & Garfunkel’s manager, Mort Lewis, sensed that the duo was poised to break into the mainstream. Up to that point, they had appealed primarily to the younger, college campus crowd. But Lewis had just received a phone call from Oscar-nominated director Mike Nichols, who wanted the pair to record some songs for his new movie, The Graduate. The film was actually almost finished at this point, but even with a fast-approaching deadline, this was undoubtedly a golden opportunity for Simon & Garfunkel.

Of course, we now know The Graduate as an essential entry into the annals of cinematic history. It is the coming-of-age story of recent grad Benjamin Braddock, played by Dustin Hoffman. Ben returns home to California to a hero's welcome from his parents, but he is pessimistic about his future. At a homecoming celebration, Ben becomes reacquainted with Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father’s business partner. Mrs. Robinson is unhappily married and sees in Ben a welcome diversion. After manipulating him into driving her home, she attempts to seduce him. Startled and confused, Ben rejects her advances. Yet his curiosity gets the better of him and the two
