Stumbling on Happiness Short Recap: As the author clarifies in the beginning of the book, this isn’t about becoming happier or improving your happiness. This is a book about understanding the human mind as it relates to happiness. The book talks about two conjoined twins Lori and Reba that are very different people, and most of us would assume must be miserable. However, they would describe their lives as anything but and couldn’t imagine it any other way. Just as the twins experience happiness, we find that describing something as simple as the color yellow is impossible without shared experience and your experience is all relative.
The book lays out the story of a rich man that is so miserable he kills himself and a happy man that is about to be hung for a crime and understanding how both could be true. It turns out the rich man was sick and in immense pain and the happy man was dying for his beliefs after a false conviction. Happiness is based on the human mind, and the human mind is not perfect it often fills in the gaps for us.
Stumbling on Happiness Application to Business: Whether it be working with customers or employees understanding that people are poor judges of what will make them happy and that their happiness depends on their perspective is important. When you stop operating from the perspective that people are rational and operate as though we are all flawed creatures that fill in the blanks for us you can create a path forward.
Stumbling on Happiness Application to Life: Because of our poor ability to know what will make us happy, we tend to “marry people that look” a lot like the people we divorced. We also tend to shade our memories and our expectations of the future based on the present for better or worse. Therefore, next time you decide to jump to a decision think back to the feeling you had the last time rather than letting your current excitement influence your memory.
Recommendation: Worth the Read
