How I consumed the book: Audible
Short Recap: The author which I wasn’t aware of when I picked the book is a church pastor. Therefore, his views and experience are colored by his beliefs and his job. However, whether you are a believe this can be consumed as a management and leadership book on its own merits.
The basis of this book is built on the idea that “waiting to be in charge” before one can be a leader is a huge myth that most of us are guilty of. In his own career as a pastor the author confesses to his embracing the myth. His common thoughts to himself were “if only I were in charge…” the things would be different, and I would be able to get things done.
He feels that this lack of ownership causes a crisis of identity in subordinates because they don’t understand the WHY of leadership. “Everyone leads something...” or someone even if its just ourselves. We can’t wait for directions or purpose we have to go about that ourselves and that is a sign of leadership.
Application to Business: Though his experience is in a church, the core principles do apply to business. Critical thinking as a skill is important in any role, and he differentiated between being critical and thinking critically. Choosing positivity and rejecting passivity are all things that leaders and subordinates could all learn from.
The “…instinct to do what needs to be done is an essential aspect of leadership…” and I believe that being aware of this need from a leader means success or failure. And, whether someone has the title that instinct is a valuable tool to all leaders including those that have simply chosen to lead.
Application to Life: The idea that our lives are in our hands and if we think that things will be drastically different when we are in charge is a value of life we all forget about. Think about when you were young thinking that being an adult and being out from under your parent’s thumb would make things so much easier. How much easier is it? It is never easier to be in charge, and if more of us realized that we could support those around us and learn to lead from any role.
