Truegoanews:Shadow Council for Margao, while criticising the Margao Municipal Council for it's failure to present the SSC students awards has today requested the Council to hand over the Felicitation and Award presentation responsibility to the Shadow Council for Margao.

In a representation to the Chief Officer of MMC Mr Madhu Narvekar, Shadow Council brought to his notice that the Margao Municipal Council had instituted an award for the SSC students who secure highest marks in Social Science at the Board exams. There are around 20 high schools in Margao, and the student from each school, scoring the highest marks in Social Science was to be awarded with a cash prize and certificate, Mr Coutinho informed.

"It is indeed unfortunate that even though we have been consistently raising this matter time and again, the Council has scant regard to this initiative to encourage students and Develop a bond between the Council and Students/Schools in Margao. Ironically when it comes to cleanliness drives and other awareness campaigns, school students are the first priority of the Council, Mr Coutinho added.

"It is around 5 years now that 20 deserving successful students, are deprived every year, of the satisfaction of receiving their award, which is also published in the respective school calender" Mr Coutinho said.

With the SSC awards being declared, it is but natural for the students to check their school calenders to see which of the awards they are eligible for. And the disappointment of not receiving the award he or she is eligible is very disheartening, Mr. Coutinho said.

The Council should realize that it is not the "prize money" that the students or their parents are interested in, but it is the pride and satisfaction they achieve while receiving the award, Coutinho added.

Mr. Coutinho stated that at one point of time citizens had even undertaken "begging" for funds for the award money, hoping that the Council would develop a little guilt, and present the awards on time every year. Following the "begging" protest, the awards for that year were presented to the deserving students, but the same lethargic attitude continued thereafter, Shadow Council Said.

With deep anguish and pain we have to observe that the Margao Municipal Council has unimaginable fund's to squander on events, allowing staff members to divert Feast fair money to their personal accounts, sopo instalment waivers to contractor's, and several other shoddy deals; but find it a burden to spend 50 to 75 thousand annually on the SSC students awards ceremony, SCM charged.

Not sparing the Margao MLA Digamber Kamat who happens to be the mentor of this Council, Mr Coutinho charged that he preferred to remain mute to this issue concerning students. It is sad that the councilors too don't understand the prestige behind a City Council Award presentation as compared to an elected MLA felicitating students, they said.

Utterly disgusted with this behavior on the part of the Council and all those connected, the Shadow Council for Margao requested the Council to hand over the award presentation to the Shadow Council for Margao, and assured to bear all the expenses towards the Award money, Certificates Refreshment, and also the hall charges if applicable.

SCM delegation comprising of it's Convener Mr Savio Coutinho, Damodar Onskar, Lincoln Gomes, Aziz Shah, Anwar Naroo and Hussain Chapparband requested the CO to respond to their request request, or announce the date for the presentation of awards within 15 days; "Alternatively we shall be constrained to believe that the Council is not interested in fulfilling it's commitment given to the schools in Margao, and the Shadow Council shall go ahead with the presentation of awards to the deserving students", Mr Coutinho said.
