How to Install Steam on LINUX for Gaming on Ubuntu (It Works!)

You can easily install Steam on Ubuntu using the Ubuntu Software Center or Apps menu, enabling access to both native Linux and Windows games with Proton support.

Step 1 — Open Ubuntu Software Center
Click on the Applications or Activities menu on your Ubuntu desktop.
Search for “Steam” in the search bar.
Select the Steam application from the search results

Step 2 — Install Steam
Click the Install button.

You may be prompted to enter your password to authorize the installation.
Wait while Ubuntu downloads and installs Steam. This may take a few minutes depending on your internet connection

Step 3 — Launch Steam for the First Time
After installation, find Steam in the Applications menu or in Ubuntu Software and click to launch.

On first launch, Steam will update itself automatically, downloading the latest client files and runtime libraries

You will see prompts to install additional components required for proper functioning; allow these installations to complete

Step 4 — Log in or Create a Steam Account
Once Steam finishes updating, the login screen will appear.
Enter your existing Steam credentials or click Create a New Account to register

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete account setup.

Step 5 — Enable Steam Play for Windows Games (Proton)
Go to Settings Steam Play.

Check “Enable Steam Play for supported titles” to run Windows games.
Optionally, check “Enable Steam Play for all other titles” to allow all Windows games to run using Proton.

Restart Steam to apply the changes

Step 6 — Install and Play Games
Navigate to the Store tab to browse or search for games.
For Linux native titles, click Install and select your preferred library location.
For Windows games, Steam will automatically use Proton if enabled.
Once installation completes, click Play in your Library to start gaming
