How to Find Ram Type & Speed before Buying on Windows PC (DDR 3, DDR 4, DDR 5)

You can determine your RAM type (DDR3, DDR4, DDR5) and speed on Windows using built-in tools like Task Manager or Command Prompt, or with third-party programs for more detailed information.

Method 1 — Using Task Manager
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Go to the Performance tab and select Memory.
Here you can see:

Speed: The frequency of your RAM in MHz
Slots used: Number of installed RAM sticks
Form factor and total memory in each slot (in some versions of Windows you can see DDR type)

This method shows the RAM speed but may not always display the DDR generation on older Windows versions.

Method 2 — Using Command Prompt (WMIC)
Press Windows + R, type cmd, and press Enter.
Enter the following command:
wmic memorychip get memorytype, speed, formfactor, capacity, devicelocator
In the output:

MemoryType provides a numeric code corresponding to the RAM type (e.g., 24 = DDR3, 26 = DDR4, 0 = unknown/DDR5 might not be detected on older WMIC versions)

Speed shows the rated frequency in MHz
Capacity shows size per stick
You can check Microsoft documentation for the numeric codes to identify DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5 correctly.

Method 3 — Using Third-Party Tools
For detailed and clear information, you can use software like:
CPU-Z: Provides RAM type, size, frequency, manufacturer, and slot usage
Speccy: Shows RAM type, speed, and other system details

HWiNFO: Offers advanced technical details including manufacturer part number and supported memory standards

These tools are especially useful for identifying DDR5 memory or if your system’s built-in tools do not report RAM type accurately.
