Joseph Schmidt was born in a province of Austria-Hungary called Bukovina which became part of Romania after the first world war.
He moved to Germany in the mid 1920s and the vast majority of his recordings were in the German language.He was in France when Germany occupied that country during the second world war and, as he was Jewish, he fled to Switzerland in October 1942. He was placed in a refugee camp and died in November 1942 at just 38 years of age.
