EP18: Marvellous Margaret River Region | Walpole, Pemberton, Augusta, Busselton | Lap of Australia
We’ve finally reached the other side of the country and spend this week exploring the marvellous Margaret River region. We begin in Walpole and Pemberton, checking out the stunning National Parks made up of some of the tallest tree’s we’ve ever seen.
We we’re lucky enough to take a trip out to Flinders Bay from Augusta and see dozens of beautiful whales playing in the bay, an experience we’ll never forget before heading into Margaret River for a few days.
We visit far too many wineries, breweries, chocolate factories, cheese factories but walk it all off discovering some incredible coastlines and delving deep into some of the ancient caves of the area.
The week ends in Busselton, a lovely little town with the most impressive jetty we’ve ever seen!

The drone footage of the whales has been kindly provided to us by:

Collected under research permit
The footage was collected as part of ‘The Fat Whales Project’ which looks at the energetics of humpback whales on the west and east coasts of Australia by looking at heir body condition loss over their migration. As humpback whales are capital breeders (they don’t replenish their energy reserves when they breed and give birth), the loss in their energy stores (fat and blubber) can be seen through changes in their body width.
So drone footage is taken to determine the body condition of the whales as they are migrating north and then again when they migrate south. The Fat Whale Project looks into the relationship between migration timing and body condition – so basically, do fatter whales in good body condition migrate earlier or later compared to those in poor body condition.
