The Face of Marcus Aurelius (Artistic Reconstruction)
Project requested by: Hypatia4242
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (b. April 26, 121 AD - d. March 17, 180 AD) Aged 58.
One of the last rulers known as the "Five Good Emperors" of the Roman Empire. He was celebrated as a military strategist but even more in later centuries as a learned philosopher whose writings are still sought and quoted by writers and leaders of the world today.
ARTIST NOTES: It is a time of a newer computer with new software for me, and this project was at the forefront of that transition, so thank you for your patience this month as I sat and figured it all out.
NOW then, there are no obvious clues to Marcus Aurelius’s color palette, apart from his Italio-Hispanic origins on his fathers’ side. As is usual in these cases, brown hair and eyes is the most generic combination most likely to be found in the absence of other information for the part of the world he was in. At one point there was a passing reference to his having had "dark" hair, which could mean anything south of blonde or red.
The dour expression seen in his statues is very much owing to the fact that Marcus was very serious and very stoic, even when he was young, and as a profound thinker I daresay the more he thought about the world the less amusing it got.
