The first to print his own bust on a minted coin, Gaius Julius Caesar (July 13, 100BC - March 15, 44BC) was one of the most unrivaled leaders of the Roman world in military, political, strategic, business, and dictatorial arenas. He had built Rome up to some of its greatest heights, and after his assassination, Rome never completely recovered its former glory.

Equally famous for his union with the illustrious Cleopatra (whom he never married because Roman law only recognized marriages between Roman people), Caesar was universally described to have a deeply creased face (he was 55 at the time of his death), a markedly saggy neck, deep set & keen dark eyes and a receding hairline which he brushed forward and often adorned with a laurel leaf crown to distract from the fact that he was balding. There are some accounts of him having a somewhat full face, but that may have been earlier in his lifetime, since later depictions of him seem to show somewhat hollow cheeks instead.

This particular bust. known variously as the "Tusculum" head, is believed by some experts to have been sculpted in Caesar's lifetime, therefore making the possible resemblance to the real man more authentic. The History Channel has already submitted their interpretation of Caesar's actual appearance based on this bust. In my own style, so now have I.

#Caesar was officially sanctified as a Roman deity by the Senate 2 years after his assassination.

#Caesar's father, Gaius Julius Caesar, died suddenly while putting on his shoes one morning. Caesar was sixteen at the time.

#This particular restoration is unusual because the head, when flipped to face the other way, revealed quite a misshapen temple which none of the historians as far as I've seen have commented on in Caesar's history, so I figured that was an anomaly of the artist sculpting the bust.

#This video takes a sudden jump from initially restoring the bust to the full color detail for an unforseen reason: just as I was capturing the "storyboard" of the restoration's progress, we had a lightning storm which killed the power, erasing everything except the layers I had created in Photoshop! In future, I will rely more on layers and less on the history bank.
