STORY LINE:

Modern technology is at the forefront of the British Government's fight to stop immigrants entering the United Kingdom illegally.

And its been so successful in combating illegal migration from France, the Government is encouraging EU partners to adopt the use of this technology to secure the whole of the north European coastline.

VOICE OVER:

As part of Britain's presidency of the European Union, the Government is taking the lead in tackling illegal immigration.

The United Kingdom's Immigration Service is using cutting edge technology to detect people illegally entering the country in the backs of lorries and boats.

"The three types of equipment examine the freight in very different ways. One is looking for heartbeat, one is using passive radiation to indicate whether there is anyone hidden inside a vehicle and the heartbeat detector is looking for the heartbeat of people that may or may not be in the vehicle."

A Carbon Dioxide detector and heartbeat monitor measure and search for life inside the vehicles; while a machine called the Passive Millimetre Wave Imager (PMMWI), uses solar radiation bounced off a screen to act as an X-ray device.

"The three pieces of equipment we are using here are relatively new and have been very very successful, so successful in fact that the number of clandestine illegal immigrants encountered in Kent has been reduced by over 65 percent in the last year, in 2004."

For the past eighteen months, the French port of Calais has been using this technology to combat people smuggling.

In the first six months of this year alone, it stopped more than 4,000 would-be illegal immigrants from reaching the UK.

The technology is also being used in the Belgian ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend.

"There was a find this morning with a PMMWI. The operator was looking at the image on the screen and could see that the load indicated should have a very flat straight edge on the top but at the front of the trailer in fact the image became very irregular. It was put to one side for examination with a CO2 probe. It gave a very high reading so it was then opened up by the Police aux Frontieres (French Border Police) and there were ten people in there."
