Moment migrants attempted to storm P&O Ferry in Calais caught on camera

Two groups of migrants were witnessed trying to force their way onto a P&O ferry bound for Dover as tension in Calais among the 1,300 migrants escalates.

The first group of 85 immigrants forced their way through security and overpowered guards, but were foiled when the ferry ramp was raised and a fire hose turned on them on Wednesday.

Soon after, another group – this time around 150 immigrants stormed the ferry terminal and got inside – but were repelled by police officers before they could reach the ferry.

Eye-witness Mark Salt said: "Looks like loads of immigrants have managed, somehow, to get into the port.

"The police have just tuned up to try and reign them all in."
He then asks port officials if they want him to 'block' an access point in his vehicle.

As scores of immigrants run off after being confronted, he says: "Here we go, trying to make a break for it."

A spokesman for P&O said ferry ramps were closed for around 15 minutes while the police rounded up the migrants and that it was forced to move one ferry away from the dock.

He said that although it was 'not unusual' to have immigrants trying to breach port security, such a huge number – estimated at 235 in total – had 'never been seen before'.

Earlier this week Natacha Bouchart, the Mayor of Calais, said it was 'being taken hostage' by immigrants and said she would blockade the port – stopping cross-Channel ferries from operating – unless Britain helped control the stream of migrants.

A spokesman for P&O said there had been a 'huge intrusion' at the port, but that it had closed the doors to the ferry and managed to stop the migrants from boarding.
