These Incredible Arches Once Lit Up San Francisco's Fillmore Neighborhood | KQED

After surviving the 1906 earthquake, San Francisco’s Fillmore neighborhood became an increasingly bustling and diverse shopping district. The Fillmore Arches were beautiful decorative ironwork pieces outfitted with hundreds of dazzling lights that criss-crossed over the busy intersections, beginning with California at McAllister. These displays helped earn the Fillmore a new moniker as “The Most Highly Illuminated Thoroughfare in America”.

Although the arches are no longer around today, their memory is a testament to the ever-changing landscape and communities of San Francisco.
