Taking Ground (fight principle) with Shihan Gavin Samin

Shihan Gavin Samin discusses the benefits of taking ground on an opponent.
Reason 1:
In most cases of self-defence, the attacker is heavier than their potential victim. What's also interesting is that if we are moving forward, we get heavier. In contrast, when we retreat, we get lighter.
Reason 2:
When we are moving forward, we can use our legs as weapons. In contrast, when we are retreating we need to use our legs for stability and balance. As a heavier person will often attempt to drive their smaller victim back, the goal of the smaller defender is to stabilise, balance and try to slide the larger attacker past them, so they can go forward with their legs as weapons again.
This especially applies to grappling, as if our hands are busy, our legs can be dangerous weapons. Additionally it should be noted that while there is a (on average) massive difference in strength between men and women (above the waist), below the waist this difference is much smaller so legs become valuable weapons.
