KUMITE DRILLS: Footwork and Fitness
The best thing for a karate-ka to invest in is their footwork (movement). Through Kihon training, a karate-ka will naturally develop a powerful, fast, accurate strike -- the key for combat however is to be able to land those strikes in a moving, chaotic situation.
Furthermore to avoid being struck by an attacker who will most likely be much larger.
Footwork is about developing speed in the legs, stability in our position and the ability to either move out of the way, or in to strike in a dynamic fashion.
This video features two drills, one more basic than the second.
