KICKING: Setting up a Round Kick

Many karate-ka rarely kick in dojo kumite simply because they do not enjoy success. But the answer to this is NOT to shy away from kicking. Rather, to, firstly, work harder on kicks. And secondly, to develop your ability to set them up properly.

Kicking is essential in self defence as our legs are longer and stronger than our arms. Equally, they can take an opponent by surprise. Remember, during dojo kumite, your opponent is expecting you to kick (thus prepared for them), you are in a well lit room wearing white pants. In self-defence, it may be dark, and your opponent is not likely expecting you to kick (nor trained to defend kicks). Additionally, you will likely be wearing shoes which can add to the impact.

There are countless ways to set up a kick. What's pivotal is that you use one of them and work on develop the skill.

We kick high in this video. While self-defence kicking is likely going to be low (thigh, knee, groin etc) its beneficial to practice high kicks during drills.

The highest point you can kick is your weakest (so kicking high ensures lower kicks have more power)

Kicking high develops more balance, coordination and stability.

Kicking high develops more explosive sped and strength in your legs.

Kicking high better develops your core muscles.

Kicking high gives you more options (thus your opponents are unsure where you might kick).

Kicking high is a challenge and fun!
