Teaching video capsule endoscopy
This video describes an on line curriculum designed to teach and educate the reading skills required for aspiring coon capsule endoscopists. The curriculum is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians for 30 hours CME and is a pre-requisite for capsule practitioners engaging in the NHS England colon capsule pilot of 10,000 capsules. The online course is delivered in English but accessible worldwide via the world wide web. The course includes an image recognition App for smartphones, on line videos of the Rpid Reader graphical user interface, a series of animated mini lectures and most improtant, 20 graded full length colon capsule videos. After reading and reporting the videos, model answers are provided and each report evaluated by a mentor. On completion of the course, a Certificate of Completion is presented and successful trainees are considered sufficiently trained to embark on solo reading.
As COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on the provision of endoscopy, colon capsule offers a minimally invasive, safe and gentle procedure that asks and answers the question "who needs a colonoscopy?". Most patients in the gastroenterology case mix have normal or benign findings not requiring intervention. A minority require referral for intervention such as polypectomy or biopsy. As capsule endoscopy has similar diagnostic capability as colonoscopy, this new device offers filter that directs the diagnostic pathway.
Novice gastroenterologists, gastroenterology trainees and nurse endoscopists complete the course in an average of 8 weeks. Delivered on line, the curriculum is available any time, anywhere.
A similar curriculum for small bowel capsule endoscopy is also available.
As clinical investigation transforms from the analogue to digital era, the acquisition of capsule reading skills will add to the options available to patients for screening, surveillance and investigation of symptoms.
