Video Capsule And The Greening Of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Healthcare contributes 4.4% of global healthcare greenhouse gases. Gastrointestinal endoscopy waste is the third largest generator of healthcare greenhouse gases. It is estimated that each endoscopy generates approximately 2Kg of disposable waste and uses up to 100 litres of decontamination fluids. There is increasing concern amongst gastroenterologists who wish to address this problem and most mitigation is designed to raise consciousness amongst endoscopists to take care, and where possible, deploy sustainable practices. Most endoscopy is either normal or reveals benign disease not requiring intervention. Video capsule endoscopy has high sensitivity and specificity for both small and large intestinal imaging. By comparison with traditional endoscopy, video capsule endoscopy generates very little waste (around 50gm) and does not require sterilisation. This video is a reminder of the problem of global warming and the large impact the widespread use of capsule endoscopy triage could make in addressing climate change targets.
