Tchaikovsky 'December' - 'Noël' ("The Seasons") - David Matthews, arranger; Carl Davis conducts

Tchaikovsky's "The Seasons" is a set of twelve short character pieces for solo piano. Each piece is the characteristic of a different month of the year in Russia. Each one is accompanied by 'poetic epigraphs' and "December" has the following:

Once upon a Christmas night
the girls were telling fortunes:
taking their slippers off their feet
and throwing them out of the gate.

The work is also heard in orchestral arrangements and the 'December' month uploaded here - in effect another of Tchaikovsky's many delightful waltzes - comes from the transcription of "The Seasons" arranged by composer David Matthews. It is played by the Norddeutsche Rundfunk Orchestra, conductor Carl Davis, and is taken from a 1991 radio broadcast of the complete work's first performance. However, this arrangement has yet to receive its first commercial recording.
