Doom and Gloom (Amos 8:1-12)
The prophet Amos, like many other prophets, proclaims that God is not the least bit impressed with devotion and worship that doesn't create a just society. And in these verses, the prophet says that doom is gathering for Israel because of their treatment of the poor. Some people imagine that Jesus somehow supersedes the prophets, but, in fact, Jesus can sound very much like the prophets, proclaiming that God will soon intervene on behalf of the poor and vulnerable. Can we imagine a God that would move against our society because if its treatment of the "least of these?"
