Saturn's rings disappearing
Short Video Series (SVS-009)

In 2018 researchers showed that Saturn's rings are gradually disappearing. In fact, this had been suspected for decades, ever since Voyagers 1 and 2 took measurements as they flew past. Electrically charged ice particles in the rings are being deflected by Saturn’s magnetic field and then pulled down to fall as rain by the planet’s gravity. If the present rate of loss continues, the entire ring system will be gone in about 300 million years.
