CHEAP PROPERTY FOR SALE - CENTRAL PORTUGAL - WOULD YOU BUY THIS OFF GRID RUIN ON A RURAL MOUNTAIN?

Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant, or expat, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton and my brother in law Lloyd, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid summer time as we visit and give you a virtual tour of the fairy tale rural slate mountain village of Alvaro in central Portugal.

Me and Mariana begin by introducing ourselves on a beautiful cobbled street, overlooking the valley and the rio Zezere, or river Zezere, we talk a little about what we expect to see and do in the village.

First things first we meander down some of the tight little rock lined lanes.

We follow the little cobble road and make our way to the very top of the village. From there we make our way down the track to the valley and spend some time riverside. I head back up to the village to collect the vehicle and collect Mariana, whilst she waits in the café at the bottom, as it was a rather warm day to say the least.

After that, Mariana and I head to the first of the two properties we planned to visit today. The first is a ruin, off grid. Anyone looking to buy this house can expect a large building project, the price is €48,000 euros and it would need complete rebuilding, but would make an excellent tiny home.

After that Joao showed us a second property, one that was already well on its way to being completely reconstructed. This second property is at the very top of a mountain, completely isolated from all the neighbouring villages and in the middle of a eucalyptus plantation. It is a very beautiful house for the attractive price of just €84,000 euros. This price however to me personally reflects the very dangerous setting of its forest location, even more so given that it only has one shingle road access that took a good ten minutes to drive up. I wonder how emergency services might look upon this if they ever needed to reach the location. I would however recommend doing your own research, of course.

Shortly afterwards Mariana and I found ourselves back at the village. Just a short drive away from the properties for sale. We were sitting in the shade of the church tower when an almighty bell chimed, this made us both laugh as we jumped out of our skin!

Next we took a little visit to the village shop come parish council, where we looked at all the little items that they were selling, Mariana even bought herself a little doll, for Chloe.

After our visit to Alvaro we decided to leave for home. Once arriving home I headed down to the sunflower patch, where all the wilted heads hang low, their seeds sitting plump as the heads dry in the powerful sun. I took the heads inside and started deseeding them, explaining a little about how and why I would do this.

The next morning our gate had a visitor ringing the bell, I jumped up and opened them up to find Sr. Pinto, a friendly face who we often see on our farm, a neighbour no less. One that you may have seen last week when we advertised his farm for sale. He came bearing gifts for us, tso little lambs that had been abandoned by their mother, a little ram lamb and a little ewe lamb. Mariana, my parents and I took them straight in and starting mixing our lamb replacement feed. We will bottle feed these beauties until they are old enough to feed on pasture for themselves. We are however in need of names for them and any suggestions would be so welcome.

At the end of the day I give a little recap under our vines with the two new-borns. I speak a little about what went on this week and of course thanked my lovely patrons for supporting us on Patreon, after I started the account a couple of weeks ago. It truly is because of these patrons contributing that I am able to continue doing what I love, creating this content. Thank you so much everyone!

If you are interested in viewing any of the properties featured in this film, please do not hesitate to contact me on either Facebook or Instagram and we can discuss the details of the property you are interested in. My opinion regarding them, translating, giving the contact details, directions etc.

See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming as expats living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep!
