HOW MUCH MONEY & HOW MANY TONNES OF FRUIT - OUR ORGANIC CHERRY FARM IN CENTRAL PORTUGAL

Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant / expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana since 2015.

Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid Spring time as we are deep into our cherry harvest, the busiest time of year on our cherry farm.

I begin the day by introducing myself underneath one of the largest cherry trees by our farmhouse, it is always the first tree to fruit of the year due to the protection it receives from the house and due to it being an early variety of cherry.

I walk up to our main cherry orchard and speak for a while about why this year is poorer than the average year, how many tonnes we expect on average and how much money that can bring us in at a wholesale price of two euros per kilo. I explain how the wholesale process works and why I believe it is a very good and viable option for someone wishing to move to Portugal and start a living as a cherry farmer.

After that I take a short walk up one terrace higher, to the sheep pasture, I explain about the expenses of cherry maintenance on the way and I am greeted by my lovely little flock of sheep, I picked them a handful of cherries and some trimmed grape vine prunings.

I push my way past the sheep after having spoken about them for a short while and make my way towards the sheeps lower barn where my temporary pigeon loft is, as I wanted to show you all Dodos progress, the little baby pigeon from a few weeks back.

Once we had seen Dodo, the other pigeons and of course the sheep the dogs and I make a slow walk back to the farmhouse to do a spot of cooking. Fortunately we did as the heavens opened and the rain began to fall hard. It stopped though as soon as it had started though, a typical short spring shower, again this could be another factor which can damage the already poor cherry crop, but lets hope not!

I sat down at the table and went through my list of lovely ingredients, some of which being our very own cherries and lemons. Then I made a batch of my cherry jam, we love this jam in our household, most mornings at least one of us will have some cherry jam on toast.

At the very end of the day I reiterate just how much we all love the harvest time, how tired it makes us and why this family affair is something that I hold very dear to my way of life and how much making these memories means to me.
I hope you all have an absolutely smashing week and I look forward to seeing you all again next week, bye for now.

See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!
