The Last Change at Jamaica
A time honored tradition of the Long Island Rail Road is the change at Jamaica. Trains to or from Brooklyn and Penn Station would pull in across the platform from each other, exchange passengers and leave at the same time, with trains being held to make their scheduled connections. With the timetable change that brings Grand Central fully online, all branches except West Hempstead will serve both Manhattan terminals, and trains will no longer be held for connecting passengers at Jamaica. In addition, trains to Brooklyn will be on a separate platform removing the cross-platform connection that many have used over the decades. Today we take one last look at this phenomenon as the last peak hour before the new timetable rolls eastbound.
