Trains in the Hudson Highlands

The Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend 2020 brings the camera to three Hudson Highlands hotspots, starting with Mine Dock Park in Fort Montgomery, NY just north of Bear Mountain. The next location is the tiny station of Manitou, the most isolated station on the Metro North system but a great place to witness fast Amtrak and Metro North trains. The final location is at the southern end of the Highlands in Peekskill.
About 50 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, the Appalachians meet the Hudson Valley. These miles between Peekskill and Beacon are known as the Hudson Highlands and are the site of important moments of the American Revolution, the Hudson River School of artists, the United States Military Academy, and various parks and recreational areas. In the 1850s, the New York and Hudson River Railroad cut a path along the east shore of the Hudson River creating what would become the New York Central's Water Level Route. The West Shore Railroad later would build along the western shore of the river, initially to rival the New York Central & Hudson River, but quickly being absorbed by the former.
Today, the rails on the east shore comprise Metro North's Hudson Line and Amtrak's Empire Corridor. Commuter trains run from Grand Central Terminal to Poughkeepsie and intercity trains run from Penn Station to Albany, Rutland, Niagara Falls, Montreal, Toronto and Chicago. The west shore is home to the CSX River Line, one of the busiest freight corridors in the eastern United States, connecting Selkirk Yard to the many facilities of the North Jersey terminal area.
Over the course of the day we see 6 Metro North trains (one with a ConnDOT New Haven P32ACDM), 3 Amtrak trains (283 to Niagara Falls, 284 from Niagara Falls and 49 to Chicago), 3 CSX freights and 1 CSX hi-railer.
