Koko Uses a Mirror - Part 2: Recognition
In these video clips ranging from 1975 to 2001, Koko is shown at ages 4, 24 and 30. Koko is interacting with mirrors of different shapes and sizes, clearly recognizing her reflection as herself. She wipes her face, picks her teeth, explores, signs and answers Penny’s questions, “Who is that?’ by responding “That’s me.” Mirror self-recognition is an indicator of self-awareness and individuality. The ability to recognize oneself in a mirror requires a level of cognitive complexity that has been associated with a number of other cognitive and social abilities. The significance of mirror self-recognition lies in its implications for an individual’s understanding of their own body, their place in the social environment, and their ability to form and maintain relationships with others. This skill provides important insights into the evolution and development of consciousness and self-awareness.
