Red Makes Koko Hungry (1999)

This video shows Koko (age 28) signing with Penny. Penny has a plan in mind for the session, but Koko is not interested in Penny’s plan. Instead, Koko signs “Red” to Penny about two different objects she picks up – a stuffed toy gorilla and a handmade card with plenty of hearts drawn on the front. Koko very emphatically signs “Red” when pointing to the hearts by signing more forcefully and repeating the sign. These changes are known as modulations and Koko is using them here for emphasis. After all Koko’s signing about “Red,” she works up an appetite!
