World Gorilla Day 2023 — Koko Used Natural Gestures!

In this KokoArc video we see footage from 1972 and 1973 when Koko was 1 and 2 years old. After Koko so easily learned the initial signs that Penny taught her (Eat, Drink and More), it was clear that Koko had an innate ability to use and understand gestures. In fact, Penny realized that Koko was also using her own set of gestures from the outset. “Come”, “Up” and “Give me” were among the natural (untaught) gestures Koko used to convey her wants and needs.

Current research shows that both captive and free-living gorillas use over 100 (and counting) distinct gestures that they link together to communicate with one another.

As we mark this World Gorilla Day (Sep. 24), let us come together in our commitment to securing a safe and thriving future for gorillas and all great apes.
