How Sonic Redefined Cinema

Sonic the Hedgehog redefined cinema through its use of audience interaction. Sonic was not the first movie to use audience feedback, as Snakes on a Plane, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Hellboy, Justice League, Marvel, and Batman: Death in the Family.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a SEGA video game character. The first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, was developed after Sega requested a mascot character to compete with Nintendo's mascot Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the 16-bit era of the early 1990s. Sonic has appeared on many consoles, including but not limited to the Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, Wii, and Wii U. While Sonic and Eggman were the only characters introduced in the first game, later games introduced Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, and Shadow the Hedgehog. The franchise has been represented in crossovers such as Sega All-Stars and Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series. Sonic the Hedgehog was also a television show from 1993-1994.

Sonic's movie adaptation was set to release in 2019, but was pushed back due to backlash regarding the design of Sonic. The trailer was released online on April 30. It received near-unanimous criticism, with Gita Jackson of Kotaku calling it "horrific" and "a blight upon this weary earth". Sonic's design was criticized for its humanoid appearance, while some writers found the use of Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" jarring. Conversely, CNET's Sean Keane praised the humor and references to the games. Within two days, the trailer was viewed more than 20 million times on YouTube, and had received hundreds of thousands of "dislike" ratings, drastically outnumbering the "like" ratings.

A second trailer revealing the redesigned Sonic was released on November 12, 2019. The trailer received far more positive responses, with many praising Sonic's new design. The tone and the humor also received positive reviews as well as the choice of song with J. J. Fad's "Supersonic". Naka said he felt the new design was "much more Sonic-like". The second trailer received the highest like-to-dislike ratio of any trailer on Google in the last three years. The film's trailers have garnered a total of more than 500 million views worldwide.

Video-game movies do not have a good reputation, as The Angry Birds Movie, Warcraft, and Ratchet & Clank can attest to, but there are some outliers such as Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Wreck‑It Ralph.

A video game is an electronic game that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a two- or three-dimensional video display device such as a touchscreen, virtual reality headset or monitor/TV set. Since the 1980s, video games have become an increasingly important part of the entertainment industry, and whether they are also a form of art is a matter of dispute.

The electronic systems used to play video games are called platforms. Video games are developed and released for one or several platforms and may not be available on others. Specialized platforms such as arcade games, which present the game in a large, typically coin-operated chassis, were common in the 1980s in video arcades, but declined in popularity as other, more affordable platforms became available. These include dedicated devices such as video game consoles, as well as general-purpose computers like a laptop, desktop or handheld computing devices.

The input device used for games, the game controller, varies across platforms. Common controllers include gamepads, joysticks, mouse devices, keyboards, the touchscreens of mobile devices, or even a person's body, using a Kinect sensor. Players view the game on a display device such as a television or computer monitor or sometimes on virtual reality head-mounted display goggles. There are often game sound effects, music and voice actor lines which come from loudspeakers or headphones. Some games in the 2000s include haptic, vibration-creating effects, force feedback peripherals and virtual reality headsets.

Since the 2010s, the commercial importance of the video game industry has been increasing. The emerging Asian markets and mobile games on smartphones in particular are driving the growth of the industry. As of 2018, video games generated sales of US$134.9 billion annually worldwide, and were the third-largest segment in the U.S. entertainment market, behind broadcast and cable TV.
